Erica Stoll has reportedly missed the deadline to file legal documents in response to her divorce from professional golfer Rory McIlroy, according to the Daily Mail. The Irish golfer’s divorce could now proceed as “uncontested” due to Stoll’s failure to respond within the legal timeframe.
McIlroy, 35, and Stoll, 36, were married in 2017 and share a three-year-old daughter, Poppy. Last month, it emerged that McIlroy had initiated divorce proceedings. Stoll was subsequently given a 20-day window, as per Florida law, to respond to the legal petition but apparently missed the deadline.
With Stoll not responding to the petition, McIlroy could now seek a default judgment, which might lead to the court ruling in his favor without hearing Stoll’s side. Neama Rahmani, a legal expert, explained to Us Weekly that failing to respond to a legal petition can lead to severe consequences, including losing rights to contest custody, property, and other divorce terms. “In any case, if you don’t file a response or a response of pleading, you’re going to be defaulted,” Rahmani said. “The judge will only hear one side of the case, and if you don’t defend yourself, that’s how you get a default judgment.”
McIlroy is currently active on the PGA Tour and has recently competed in several tournaments, including the PGA Championship, the Charles Schwab Challenge, and the Canadian Open. Despite the ongoing personal challenges, McIlroy has maintained focus on his career. He has refrained from discussing the divorce publicly during competitions or press events but previously stated his ability to compartmentalize personal and professional matters. “Getting inside the ropes for that four or five hours or whatever it is a day, it’s a nice escape from everything else that’s going on in the world of golf,” McIlroy shared ahead of last month’s PGA Championship. “I’ve always been able to compartmentalize pretty well. I seem to, for whatever reason, play very good golf whenever I have a lot of stuff going on.”
McIlroy is currently competing in Memorial Tournament in Ohio.
