It’s not every day that PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy hits a shot this poorly, but that’s exactly what happened during the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. McIlroy had a challenging week at “Jack’s Place,” and his shot on the fifth hole on Sunday encapsulated his struggles.
After smashing his drive down the middle of the fairway, McIlroy aimed to reach the green in two shots. However, he misjudged his fairway wood shot, catching it a bit heavy, which sent his ball—a TaylorMade TP5x—into the water hazard.

Frustrated, McIlroy finished the shot with one hand and, in a moment of exasperation, tossed his club backward across the ground. Unfortunately, his throw had more force than intended, almost hitting a nearby cameraman. McIlroy quickly apologized with a sheepish “Oops, sorry!”
McIlroy ended up with a bogey on the hole but managed to rebound with a birdie on the next par-5. Despite this, it seemed McIlroy would have to wait for his 27th PGA Tour victory. At the time of writing, he was trailing Scottie Scheffler by seven strokes. Scheffler, who held a four-shot lead after three rounds, was in pursuit of his fifth title in the last eight events.
The Memorial Tournament marks the final PGA Tour event for McIlroy and others before the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2. The third men’s major of the year is set to begin next Thursday.
