The Memorial Tournament has announced a historic milestone for its 50th anniversary in 2025: Barbara Nicklaus, wife of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, will be honored as the first non-golfer to receive the prestigious Captains Club award. This accolade, awarded annually since the tournament’s inception, has been bestowed on 84 previous recipients, all prominent figures in the world of golf.
Barbara Nicklaus expressed heartfelt gratitude upon learning of the honor. “This recognition is incredibly special to me, and I am deeply thankful to the Captains Club for considering me,” she said. Reflecting on her long association with the Memorial Tournament, she added, “The Memorial Tournament has been a cherished part of our family’s life. It’s been a joy to support Jack and see his dream become our reality over the years. I am truly humbled to join the esteemed group of past honorees, whom I have admired and respected for so long.”
Barbara, originally from Columbus, Ohio, met Jack at Ohio State University, where she was studying nursing. The couple married on July 23, 1960, and have been together for nearly 64 years. In 1965, they moved to North Palm Beach, Florida, where they raised their five children: Jack II, Steve, Nan, Gary, and Michael. They also have 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Jack Nicklaus, known as the Golden Bear, spoke emotionally about Barbara’s crucial role in his life and career, especially her contributions to the Memorial Tournament. “This is a deeply emotional moment for me,” Jack said during a CBS broadcast, visibly moved. “I am so proud of her. She has done so much for so many, and for 50 years here at Muirfield Village Golf Club, she has given so much and received little recognition. To see her honored like this, I couldn’t help but shed tears.”
Barbara Nicklaus, born Barbara Jean Bash, graduated from North High in 1957. Her impact on the golf community goes beyond her support of Jack’s career. She has received several prestigious awards, including the 2015 Bob Jones Award from the United States Golf Association and the 2019 PGA of America Distinguished Service Award.
As the Memorial Tournament approaches its 50th anniversary, Barbara’s recognition highlights her significant contributions to the world of golf and her unwavering support of Jack’s legacy. This honor not only celebrates her achievements but also marks a significant moment in the history of the tournament.
The 2025 Memorial Tournament is set to be a memorable event, celebrating both its milestone anniversary and the remarkable contributions of Barbara Nicklaus to the Nicklaus family’s enduring legacy in golf.
