The US Open in 2024 is set to witness an unprecedented occurrence: a son coaching his father, a historic first in the world of golf. The spotlight is on Tiger Woods, a legendary 15-time major winner, and his 15-year-old son, Charlie Woods, who, despite his youth and inexperience in elite amateur golf, is already one of the most recognized teenagers in the sport. The duo’s dynamic is unique, with Tiger leaning heavily on the support and insights of his son as he prepares for the tournament at Pinehurst.
Since arriving in North Carolina on Sunday, Tiger has been closely accompanied by Charlie, with Rob McNamara, a long-time friend and informal swing advisor, keeping a discreet distance. Charlie’s presence is far from symbolic; he holds a player-support badge and is actively participating in his father’s preparation. When asked about Charlie’s role, Tiger explained, “As far as his responsibilities, it’s the same as that of a coach. I trust him with my swing and my game. He’s seen it more than anybody else in the world. He’s seen me hit more golf balls than anyone.”
This marks a significant departure from Tiger’s previous approach to coaching. Since a car crash three years ago that nearly cost him his right leg, Woods has not employed a formal coach. The catastrophic injuries necessitated a complete overhaul of his swing, a process that Tiger undertook with Charlie’s assistance. Together, they have spent countless hours on the range at their home in Jupiter, experimenting with what is physically feasible for Tiger’s comeback.
