Scott and Diane Scheffler eagerly arrived at Medical City Dallas Hospital just an hour after their grandchild’s birth. Their son, Scottie, had kept them in suspense about the baby’s gender and name. Scottie and his wife, Meredith, were visibly exhausted but overjoyed, as they had just become parents at 8:40 a.m. with the birth of Bennett Boone Scheffler, who was now cradled in Meredith’s arms.
Scott Scheffler expressed his amazement at seeing his son and daughter-in-law as new parents, describing the joy in their eyes as a profound sense of receiving a gift from God. Interestingly, the name Boone signifies blessed, a fitting choice considering Scottie’s status as the world’s top golfer and his current dominant streak, making him a favorite to win the upcoming U.S. Open. This event would coincide perfectly with his first Father’s Day as a new dad.
Bennett will eventually understand the blessing of being part of a close-knit family that becomes even more united in times of both joy and hardship. The Schefflers’ strength and unity were evident during the extraordinary first nine days of Bennett’s life. These days were marked by overwhelming joy, beginning with the birth of not only Bennett but also his cousin, Palmer, eight hours later in Temple on Wednesday, May 8.
Scottie faced the initial shock and chaos of this period with remarkable composure, demonstrating the collective resolve of the Scheffler family and the man Scottie has become, as noted by family members and his longtime coach in recent interviews with The Dallas Morning News. Until then, despite his quiet dominance in golf over the past two years, many considered Scottie unremarkable off the course.
Randy Smith, the pro emeritus at Royal Oaks Country Club and Scottie’s coach since he was seven, noted that the real essence of Scottie emerged during these challenging times, illustrating his strength of character.
The North Texas community is well-acquainted with Scottie and the Scheffler family, who moved from New Jersey to Dallas in 2002 when Diane took on a role as the COO of a law firm. Despite being a dominant golfer akin to Tiger Woods in the early 2000s, Scottie has maintained a grounded and unassuming public persona.
Scottie’s journey began in Highland Park High School, where he grew 14 inches in 30 months and won three state championships. In 2013, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur, and the following year, he tied for 22nd place at the HP Byron Nelson Championship with his sister Callie as his caddie.
Amid recent triumphs in Texas sports, such as the Rangers winning the World Series and the Stars reaching the conference finals, Scottie stands out on the global stage. He has won two of the last three Masters Tournaments and has been the world’s top-ranked golfer for 90 weeks, including the last 55. Recently, he secured his fifth victory in his last eight starts by winning the prestigious Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
Despite earning over $90 million in tournament winnings and bonuses, Scottie remains deeply connected to his family and faith, embodying the same grounded values as his sisters Callie, Sara, and Molly.
