orthern Irish golf star Rory McIlroy, currently ranked as the world’s number two golfer, has decided to call off his divorce with wife Erica Stoll. The couple, who have been married for seven years, have resolved their differences, leading to the dismissal of their divorce papers filed in a Florida court.
McIlroy, who seemed to be in high spirits, addressed the media at Pinehurst, North Carolina, ahead of the US Open, explaining the situation. “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” he told The Guardian. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
Speculation about McIlroy’s personal life had intensified after reports emerged of a potential romantic involvement with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis. The rumors were fueled by a photograph of the two hugging during an interview and the fact that Balionis was not wearing her wedding ring. Balionis is married to football coach Bryn Renner, and according to a source cited by US Weekly, there is no romantic relationship between her and McIlroy. Neither McIlroy nor Balionis addressed the rumors publicly.
McIlroy’s decision to call off the divorce comes just days before the start of the US Open, taking place from June 13 to 16. During the press conference, he reflected on his career, stating, “I’m really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors.”
The couple’s story began in 2012 when McIlroy overslept at the Ryder Cup, and Stoll, then in charge of managing volunteers for the event, organized a police escort to ensure he arrived on time. At that time, McIlroy was still in a relationship with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, but they ended their engagement in 2014. McIlroy and Stoll started dating in 2015, with McIlroy proposing in December of that year. They married in 2017 and welcomed their daughter, Poppy, three years later.
McIlroy, now 34, has had an illustrious career, having been ranked the world’s number one golfer nine times since 2012 and securing 26 PGA Tour titles.
