Amid swirling rumors about their marital troubles, Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll have made it clear they are not heading for a divorce. The couple, who had been reported to be on the brink of separation, announced they have reconciled just before the 2024 U.S. Open. In a statement to *The Guardian*, McIlroy shared that the couple has chosen to stay together and focus on their future as a family.
“There have been unfortunate rumors about my personal life recently,” McIlroy told *The Guardian* in a story published on June 11, 2024, titled “Rory McIlroy’s Divorce Off Before U.S. Open as Couple Resolve Differences.” He added, “Responding to every rumor is pointless. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is together as a family. We are grateful to have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
Wedding and Family Life
Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll were married in 2017 at the picturesque Ashford Castle in Ireland. The wedding, held at the luxurious venue, reportedly cost more than $267,000, according to the *Irish Mirror*. Speaking about their choice of location, McIlroy said in 2016, “We want to keep it to ourselves as much as we possibly can. Erica loves Ireland; it’s very similar to her hometown in Rochester, upstate New York, where it’s also very green and leafy.”
The couple is proud parents to a daughter named Poppy. McIlroy announced her birth on social media, sharing, “Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born August 31st, 12:15 pm. She is the absolute love of our lives. Mother and baby are doing great. Massive thank you to all the staff at Jupiter Medical Center and Dr. Sasha Melendy for their amazing care.”
Meeting and Life Together
McIlroy and Stoll met while she was working for the PGA Tour. Known for her preference to stay out of the public eye, Stoll has often been seen supporting her husband during various PGA tournaments. Reflecting on their relationship, McIlroy told the *Irish Independent* in a January 2017 interview, “We were friends before anything romantic happened. We met while she was working for the PGA of America and renting a condo in Palm Beach. I found it refreshing to be with someone who was living a normal life rather than being concerned about trivial issues.”
Moving Forward
With the couple’s personal life now back on track, McIlroy is eager for the focus to return to his performance on the golf course. Despite the personal challenges, McIlroy showed strong form and was a contender at the U.S. Open following the news of their reconciliation. As McIlroy continues through the PGA Tour season, he hopes to shift attention away from his private life and back to his game.
