Bryson DeChambeau clinched his second U.S. Open title on Sunday at Pinehurst No. 2, triumphing over Rory McIlroy with a remarkable bunker shot on the final hole. DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, later shared that he had seen the LIV Golf star pull off “way harder shots” before the critical moment on the 18th hole.
McIlroy, who had dropped his third shot in four holes, gave DeChambeau an opening. The American golfer needed a par on the 72nd and final hole to secure his second major title. Despite struggling with his driver throughout the final round, DeChambeau found himself in the rough after pulling his tee shot left. He managed to punch the ball out into a bunker, leaving him with a challenging up-and-down to claim victory. DeChambeau then executed a brilliant 55-yard shot to within four feet of the hole, setting up a putt that he successfully sunk, sparking wild celebrations. This victory marked his second U.S. Open win, following his success at Winged Foot four years ago.
Reflecting on the final two hours of the intense finale, DeChambeau noted the significant encouragement from his caddie. “Greg telling me, ‘You got this shot. I’ve seen way harder shots pulled off from you,'” was a standout moment for him. DeChambeau also emphasized the crucial role Bodine has played in his career, helping him grow both as a golfer and as a person.
“I was struggling,” DeChambeau admitted candidly. “I didn’t know where my game was. Greg was in a similar place, starting his business, Evergreen, and dealing with personal challenges. It was fate that brought us together, and we’ve helped each other improve. He gave me a chance when I wasn’t sure what I could offer, and despite our uncertainties, he’s been a special influence in my life. Greg’s mellow demeanor and diligent work ethic have brought out the best in me, teaching me that life isn’t just about golf.”
