English golfer Eddie Pepperell has suggested that Rory McIlroy should part ways with his caddie, Harry Diamond, in the wake of McIlroy’s disappointing loss at the US Open. McIlroy, who appeared poised to secure the championship, faltered in the final holes, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to capitalize and claim victory.
In the aftermath of the defeat, scrutiny has turned toward McIlroy’s decision-making during the critical moments of the tournament at Pinehurst, raising questions about Diamond’s influence. McIlroy and Diamond, who share a close friendship, faced criticism for several questionable club choices during pivotal stages of the competition. Some believe these decisions played a significant role in McIlroy’s collapse.
Pepperell, a former British Masters winner, voiced his opinion on The Chipping Forecast podcast, emphasizing the importance of having a strong caddie during high-pressure situations. “Sometimes, to win a golf tournament, you need to limp over the line, and I’m adamant that it is your caddie on occasions like that can really be the difference that can pull you over that finishing line,” Pepperell said. He noted that McIlroy’s performance on the 15th hole was particularly telling, citing a poor club choice that led to a critical bogey. “My immediate takeaway is that with a stronger caddie, he would not have made the bogey he made on the 15th. It was a poor choice of club, and he hit in the one place he shouldn’t have hit it,” he added.
Pepperell suggested that a more assertive caddie might have prevented the mistakes that shifted the momentum away from McIlroy. The bogey on the 15th was seen as a turning point, affecting McIlroy’s mindset and ultimately leading to his loss. As McIlroy reflects on the defeat, Pepperell’s comments add to the conversation about whether a change in caddie could help him regain his winning form.
Pepperell added, “I wouldn’t be suggesting this if he had won, but I believe Rory needs a new caddie. I feel bad saying that about Harry, as he seems like a great person and probably a good caddie. However, today, Rory needed someone who could help him get across the finish line.”
