The PGA Tour has acknowledged Tiger Woods’ extraordinary achievements by granting him an automatic qualification for eight of its signature events. This decision, referred to as the Sponsor Exemption for Lifetime Achievement, applies to golfers who have secured at least 80 tournament wins in their careers. Woods, with 82 victories and 15 major titles, is the sole active player meeting this criterion.
Tour officials highlighted Woods’ unparalleled ability to attract viewers as a key reason for this exemption. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan emphasized the significance of Woods’ contribution to the sport, noting that his participation has consistently enhanced the profile and appeal of every event he’s competed in.
Monahan stated, “Tiger’s won over 80 tournaments and his impact on golf is immeasurable. Every tournament he joins becomes bigger and better, drawing more attention and increasing its stature. We, as an organization, wanted to honor his exceptional contributions in this unique way.”
This special exemption for Woods will take effect in 2025. The selected events will feature larger prize pools and offer increased points that are crucial for qualifying for the annual FedEx Cup Playoffs, underscoring the importance and prestige of these tournaments.
