Many golf enthusiasts gathered early on the final day of the Travelers Championship, eager to catch all the action. Among them was Sakura Downing from Preston, who expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “Just like watching my favorite people play, it also just kind of inspires me as a golfer myself.”
Sean Wollenberg from Monroe shared a similar sentiment, stating, “I love this tournament. It’s fantastic. Everything they do here is amazing. It’s a beautiful place.” Wollenberg, who had arrived at the course early for the 6:50 a.m. tee times on Sunday, emphasized the importance of witnessing the entire event, saying, “You have to see the whole thing. You have to see it through.”
Wollenberg’s experience was shared with his wife, an employee of Travelers Insurance, who was volunteering on the course. Downing, attending the championship for the first time with her family, described her feelings, “It’s just so many emotions all at once because it’s my first time, and I’m very excited to see my favorite players play today.”
The Downing family’s visit was particularly significant for their young daughter, an avid golfer who was eager to see her role model, Collin Morikawa. She explained her admiration, “One thing is I’m half Japanese so it’s kind of like that. But also, I really like his personality for one, and I love his swing. You know how he takes it really slowly back in the backswing.”
The event also held special meaning for Vietnam veteran Louis Lacaprucia, who attended on both Thursday and Sunday. “Admission is free to veterans. I feel grateful for it. It’s very nice,” he said.
Fans look forward to the Travelers Championship each year, the only PGA Tour stop in New England. Wollenberg, a golfer since the age of four, reflected on his passion for the sport, saying, “I’ve been golfing since I was about four years old. My older brother taught me, so just to come out and see the pros do it, there’s nothing like it.”
