Scottie Scheffler was visibly emotional as he held his newborn baby during an interview with Amanda Balionis after his win at the Travelers Championship.
The current World No. 1 emerged victorious on a dramatic final day at the PGA Tour’s last non-cut event in Connecticut, despite a significant interruption. Climate change protestors invaded the 18th green just as Scheffler and fellow leader Tom Kim were preparing for their final putts. The protestors, who threw colored powder on the course, were swiftly arrested, and groundskeepers cleaned the green, allowing the tournament to resume. Kim’s clutch birdie forced a playoff, but Scheffler ultimately secured his sixth PGA Tour win of the year.
Following his victory, Scheffler gave a touching interview to CBS reporter Balionis while holding his one-month-old son, Bennett. Reflecting on the changes in his life since becoming a father, he shared, “Afternoons at home are very different now. Instead of relaxing and watching TV, it’s more about figuring out what’s going on with our little one.” He added, with a voice full of emotion, “It’s been a ton of fun, and I’m lucky to have great friends around me.”

Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, welcomed their first child just before last month’s PGA Championship, marking a whirlwind period for the two-time Masters champion. This tumultuous stretch also included a surprising incident in Kentucky where Scheffler faced, but later had dropped, criminal charges for allegedly ignoring police instructions and an altercation with an officer.
The excitement followed him to the Travelers Championship, where Extinction Rebellion protestors disrupted the final moments by storming the course and throwing colored powder. The protestors, wearing shirts with messages like “No Golf On A Dead Planet,” were quickly apprehended. The commotion delayed the tournament’s conclusion as groundskeepers used leaf blowers to clean the green.
Despite the disturbance, Scheffler regained his composure to finish his round, narrowly missing a 26-foot putt that would have clinched the win. Kim, unfazed by the delay, sank his birdie putt to force a playoff. Ultimately, Scheffler held his nerve in the playoff to secure the championship.
Reflecting on the incident, Scheffler said, “It was definitely strange. I saw someone out of the corner of my eye, then suddenly there were police officers running everywhere. You don’t know what’s happening or their intentions, which can be unsettling.” He praised the quick response from the authorities, noting, “They handled it very quickly, and we’re grateful for that.”
Scheffler’s victory, amid personal milestones and public drama, underscored his ability to navigate challenges both on and off the course.
