Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf Nashville Invitational round was thrown off course after he hit his tee shot into the water on the sixth hole. The LIV Golf standout expressed his frustration, attributing the mishap to the distracting presence of drones that are used for aerial coverage during the tournament.
Rahm, who switched from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf in a deal reportedly worth over $300 million last year, was visibly annoyed and vocal about the drones. “Every tournament. It’s ——- incredible. Right on my backswing. These ——- drones every time,” Rahm fumed after his shot landed in the water at the sixth hole, causing a setback as he was trailing leader Tyrrell Hatton by just a few shots.
Hatton eventually secured the victory after a weather delay, while Rahm, still searching for his first LIV Golf win, needed a near-perfect back-nine to stay in contention but could not recover. This has been a challenging year for Rahm, who failed to retain his Masters title, finishing tied for 45th, missed the cut at the PGA Championship, and withdrew from the U.S. Open due to a foot injury.
Rahm’s injury woes forced him to pull out of the LIV Golf event in Houston after an infected cut on his toe worsened. In a statement, Rahm expressed his disappointment: “After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from this week’s U.S. Open Championship. To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers, and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing championship! Hopefully, I’ll be back in action sooner than later!”
Bryson DeChambeau, who recently won the U.S. Open by edging out Rory McIlroy by a single stroke, joined the LIV Golf Nashville event fresh off his victory celebrations. Despite the enthusiastic support from the crowd, DeChambeau admitted he wasn’t in peak form, saying, “I’m a zombie right now, I’m a dead man walking I feel like.” Nonetheless, he praised the support and spirit of LIV Golf, stating, “It’s quite an honor to be out here and have so much support it’s fantastic. This is what LIV is all about, what we’ve tried to do for a long time and continuing to gain momentum. I’m just proud to be a part of it.”
