Scottie Scheffler has set a new benchmark in golf by breaking Tiger Woods’ long-standing record for the most points earned in the first six months of a year on the PGA Tour. This milestone, achieved with his victory at the Travelers Championship, underscores Scheffler’s dominance and stellar performance this season.
Scheffler, who just celebrated his 28th birthday, secured his sixth PGA Tour title out of his last 10 starts. He clinched the Travelers Championship with a two-putt par from 15 feet on the first extra hole, where Tom Kim bogeyed after his ball got plugged in the greenside bunker. This victory brought Scheffler’s career total to 12 PGA Tour titles and earned him $3.6 million in prize money.
More significantly, Scheffler has now amassed 583 points in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) in the first half of 2024, surpassing Tiger Woods’ record of 532 points set in 2000. Woods’ 2000 season is legendary, where he won nine titles, a feat that seemed untouchable until now. The update on Scheffler’s record-breaking points came from OWGR expert Nosferatu, who highlighted the magnitude of Scheffler’s achievement on X/Twitter.
In comparison, by this time in 2000, Woods had secured five titles: the Mercedes Championship, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Bay Hill Invitational, Memorial Tournament, and the US Open. Woods continued that year to set a record with nine wins, including The Open, US PGA, WGC-NEC Invitational, and the Canadian Open. Scheffler, who has won nearly $30 million in prize money from his six victories this season, will need to maintain his momentum to match Woods’ nine-title record, a feat only replicated by Vijay Singh in 2004.
Scheffler’s upcoming schedule includes at least five more events on the PGA Tour: the Scottish Open, The Open, FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship, which serves as the FedEx Cup finale. Additionally, he will compete in the Olympic Golf tournament in Paris in August and participate in the US Presidents Cup team in September.
Scheffler’s current form and consistent performances have not only placed him at the pinnacle of the world rankings but have also redefined the competitive landscape of professional golf, setting a new standard for future generations.
