Golf fans have voiced strong criticism towards Jon Rahm after he attributed a wayward tee shot to the noise of an overhead drone during the final round of LIV Golf Nashville. Rahm, who joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit last year in a record-setting $600 million deal, has consistently complained about drones disrupting his play throughout his debut season on the tour.
On the 6th tee, an exasperated Rahm was caught on camera cursing the drones:
“Every tournament. It’s f***ing incredible. Right on my backswing. These f***ing drones every time.”
LIV Golf commentator David Feherty responded with a simple “Hmm,” reflecting the skepticism shared by many fans. The reaction from golf enthusiasts was swift and unyielding, with numerous fans questioning how Rahm could blame external noise, especially given LIV Golf’s ‘golf but louder’ philosophy. One fan pointed out, “Didn’t he sign up for that though?” highlighting that Rahm should have anticipated a noisier environment when joining the tour, which is known for its lively atmosphere and EDM beats.
The backlash didn’t stop there. Social media platforms were flooded with fans criticizing Rahm’s excuse, arguing that a professional of his caliber should be able to maintain focus despite distractions. Many were quick to remind him that other players, including Bob MacIntyre, have also faced drone distractions but managed to secure victories. MacIntyre, for example, overcame his frustrations with drones to win his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open earlier this month.
Despite his complaints, Rahm’s performance in Nashville was notable. After the mishap on the 6th hole, which led to a double-bogey six, he rallied to finish with a final-round 68 and secured a tie for third place. This marked his eighth top-10 finish in nine events on the LIV Golf circuit. However, fans were quick to point out that despite his consistent performances, Rahm has yet to achieve an individual win in his debut season, a point of contention given his massive $600 million contract.
Rahm’s difficulties extend beyond the LIV circuit. His performances in major tournaments this year have been underwhelming. He placed T45 in his title defense at The Masters in April, missed the cut at the US PGA in May, and had to withdraw from the US Open due to a foot infection. Fans noted that other former World No.1 players on LIV Golf are also struggling. Dustin Johnson, despite an early-season win, has only one top-10 finish in his last ten starts and has missed cuts in two majors.
While Rahm’s team, Legion XIII, celebrated a victory with teammate Tyrrell Hatton winning his first LIV Golf title in Nashville, the focus among fans remained on Rahm’s complaints. The widespread criticism suggests many believe he needs to adapt better to the LIV Golf environment, with some questioning whether he regrets joining the circuit in the first place.
