Behind every great golfer is an experienced caddie, and for Scottie Scheffler, that person is Ted Scott. The duo began working together in late 2021, and their collaboration has quickly become one of the most successful on the PGA Tour.
Ted Scott is best known for his long-term partnership with Bubba Watson, during which they won two Masters tournaments. Their 15-year collaboration was considered one of the strongest in professional golf, so it was a surprise when they decided to part ways. Watson, who now plays in the LIV Golf League, explained that his ongoing wrist and knee injuries made him uncertain about his future in golf, leading to their mutual decision to split. “I told Ted, ‘I’m 43, and I don’t know how much longer I’ll play. My wrist is in bad shape.’ Ted needed more years in the game, and we ended things on good terms with a nice retirement package for him,” Watson shared.
After leaving Watson, Scott, a devout Christian, thought he was retiring from caddying until Scottie Scheffler reached out. The two had initially met in a Bible study group, which helped form their bond. Scott recalled his first impressions of Scheffler, saying, “I admired him as a person, which made me believe he could be a great partner on the course.”
Before committing to Scheffler, Scott had a candid discussion with him about his temperament on the course. Scheffler had a reputation for showing frustration, sometimes directing it toward his caddie. Fellow PGA Tour caddie Paul Tesori, who has worked for Vijay Singh, Webb Simpson, and Cameron Young, highlighted the importance of this conversation: “Ted and Scottie talked extensively before Ted agreed to caddie for him. Ted, being nearly 50 and a veteran of the tour, wanted assurances that Scottie would work on his attitude. Scottie agreed, and he has truly followed through.”
Since joining forces, Scheffler and Scott have achieved significant success. Scheffler had a breakout year in 2022, winning several tournaments, including the Masters. In 2024, their winning streak continued with multiple victories. Scheffler defended his title at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, often referred to as golf’s unofficial fifth major. Additionally, he claimed victories at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Memorial Tournament, solidifying their reputation as a formidable team on the tour.
