Jason Day will finally make his Olympic debut, joining a brother-sister duo among the four Australian golfers set to compete in the Paris 2024 Games. Day, who was world No. 1 in 2016, opted out of the Rio Olympics due to concerns over the Zika virus, particularly since his wife was pregnant at the time. Reflecting on his decision earlier this year, Day expressed regret for missing out on the opportunity.
“I had one of those spots, and at the time we were having kids, and then obviously there was that (Zika) scare, so I was kind of like a little bit freaked out about that,” Day said during a PGA tournament in May.
The Australian Olympic Committee announced that Min Woo Lee will join Day on the men’s team, while Minjee Lee and Hannah Green will form the women’s team. Notably, Min Woo Lee and Minjee Lee are siblings.
Minjee Lee will become the first Australian golfer to compete in three Olympics, Green returns for her second Games, while Day and Min Woo Lee will both make their Olympic debuts.
The four players secured their spots based on their International Golf Federation Olympic rankings at the end of a two-year qualifying period. Green and Minjee Lee finished the period ranked seventh and 11th respectively, while Day and Min Woo Lee are Australia’s highest-ranked male golfers at 27th and 36th respectively.
Green, who matched Australia’s best Olympic golf finish with a tie for fifth at Tokyo 2020, has won two LPGA Tour events this year. Minjee Lee boasts an impressive 10 career LPGA wins.
