PGA Tour star Cam Davis secured a remarkable victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, capturing his second title at the event and pocketing a substantial £2 million prize. The Australian golfer emerged triumphant at the Detroit Golf Club on Monday, overcoming American Akshay Bhatia in a dramatic five-way shootout.
Bhatia, who had been in consistent form throughout the tournament, faltered on the final day with a critical bogey, ultimately finishing behind Davis. The 29-year-old Davis posted an impressive 18-under-par score, securing his second win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and his first on the PGA Tour since his initial victory at the same event three years ago.
After his victory, a visibly emotional Davis choked back tears as he paid tribute to his 22-year-old rival, Bhatia, during the post-round interview. “This is crazy,” Davis said. “I wouldn’t wish what happened to Akshay on anyone. But I’ve done a lot of grinding to get myself out of a hole and to all of a sudden do that, it’s pretty good.”
Davis candidly discussed the mental challenges he has faced in recent weeks, revealing that he had sought the help of a hypnotherapist to address his struggles. “I had a lot of support to get me out of the doldrums there,” the Sydney native remarked. “I saw a little bit of a spark last week but nothing to show this coming. I started working with a hypnotherapist a couple of weeks ago just to take another angle in trying to get myself sorted out.”
Reflecting on his journey, Davis shared that he had been in a difficult mental state for the past six months, feeling as though opportunities were slipping away as he struggled with his game. “From where I was a couple of weeks ago until today, just a completely different person. I honestly haven’t been in a very good place mentally at all for the last six months or so. I felt like all the opportunities have been slipping out of my hands as the year progresses without playing very good golf,” he said.
Davis’s victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic marks a significant milestone in his career, following his career-best finish at a major tournament last year when he tied for fourth place at the PGA Championship, which was won by Brooks Koepka.
The win not only highlights Davis’s skill on the course but also underscores the importance of mental resilience and the impact of seeking help during challenging times. His victory serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance and the significance of mental well-being in achieving success.
