Heartbreak at the 72nd Hole: Bhatia’s Close Call at Rocket Mortgage Classic.
In a dramatic finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Akshay Bhatia found himself tied with Cameron Davis at 18-under-par. Standing on the 72nd hole, Bhatia faced a challenging 32-foot birdie putt that could clinch the victory. Unfortunately, his attempt fell significantly short, leaving him with a difficult four-foot par putt to force a playoff. The 22-year-old then missed the crucial par putt, allowing Davis to claim the title. This heartbreaking three-putt was Bhatia’s first of the week.
As Bhatia stood on the green in disbelief, staring at the ground, he could only wonder, “How did this happen?” Yet, unlike Rory McIlroy’s reaction at the U.S. Open, Bhatia faced every question about his 18th-hole mishap head-on, showing grace under pressure.
In his post-round reflections, Bhatia reminded everyone of his humanity and fallibility. “It’s tough; no other way to put it. It just sucks,” Bhatia admitted candidly. “There’s a lot of slope there, and you don’t want to leave it five or six feet past the hole. Honestly, I was just a little nervous. The greens slow down throughout the day, and poa annua can be tricky.”
Despite this setback, Bhatia’s impressive track record speaks for itself. He secured his first PGA Tour win at the Barracuda Championship last year and followed it with a victory at the Valero Texas Open in April, both in playoff situations.
This time, however, Bhatia won the admiration of many not through his performance but through his heartfelt words. His candidness and relatability struck a chord with golf fans, who often struggle to connect with the flawless execution of the sport’s elite.
