When Rory McIlroy arrives at the Renaissance Club for the Scottish Open, he’ll be met with a surprise: a plaque commemorating his extraordinary shot on the 18th hole in 2023. The plaque celebrates McIlroy’s remarkable 2-iron shot from over 200 yards out, which landed just 11 feet from the hole in the face of 40-mph winds, leading to his winning birdie. This shot is considered one of the most impressive in recent golf history.
“We just did it today,” said club founder Jerry Sarvadi, according to Golf Week. “We’re going to tell him when he gets here.” McIlroy has acknowledged the significance of the shot, stating it will be one of the top five shots of his career. With the Scottish Open set to begin on July 11, McIlroy will aim to maintain his momentum at the Renaissance Club, where he won last year.
Currently, McIlroy is focusing on mental recovery following a disappointing finish at Pinehurst. He has opted out of the Travelers Championship, which had a £3.1 million grand prize, and also did not participate in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which offered a £1.3 million payday. In addition, he missed the John Deere Classic, as part of his strategy to regain his mental composure after a tough loss.
After his US Open loss, McIlroy posted on social media about taking a break from golf to prepare for the Scottish Open. “Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I’ve had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer,” he wrote. “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that.
“As I reflect on my week, I’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly, the two missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I’ll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have.
“The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again. I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon.”
Following the tournament, McIlroy was seen spending time with his wife, Erica Stoll. The couple’s appearance together comes after a surprising reconciliation in mid-June.
With his US Open setback and personal matters behind him, McIlroy can now concentrate on performing at his best. The plaque at the Renaissance Club stands as a testament to his incredible skill and potential for greatness.
