Rory McIlroy’s prediction that LIV Golf wouldn’t slow down is becoming a reality, as the Saudi-backed league continues to grow. After its dramatic entry into professional golf in 2022, LIV’s potential was initially underestimated by the PGA Tour. Now, two years later, it stands as a major force, rivaling the Tour itself.
This week, Will Newell, LIV’s creative director, announced the opening of a new office in London via Instagram. The London office joins existing locations in Florida and New York, where the staff has been increasing.
Despite being a vocal critic of LIV, McIlroy acknowledged its steady growth. “I don’t see LIV slowing down in the next couple of years,” he told Sports Illustrated in June. He noted that the league has significant resources, including over 200 employees and long-term player contracts, suggesting a lasting presence in professional golf.
McIlroy also hinted at the potential for greater collaboration between LIV and other tours, though he acknowledged the complexities involved. “With so many tours and tournaments, it’s challenging to figure out schedules and player participation,” he said.
Initially, the PGA Tour tried to counter LIV’s influence but eventually reached a framework agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) last June. However, a final deal has yet to be completed. According to reports from Fire Pit Collective’s Alan Shipnuck, a draft agreement has been approved, but PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan emphasized that there’s still work to be done to finalize it.
Monahan’s memo to players highlighted ongoing discussions aimed at creating a unified and competitive vision for professional golf that offers players the best global opportunities.
