Tommy Fleetwood is set to welcome back his long-term caddie, Ian Finnis, for The Open at Royal Troon later this month. Fleetwood, who finished joint-10th last year, hopes to challenge for the title with Finnis back by his side. Finnis returns to the tour following open heart surgery, a procedure he underwent after battling a prolonged infection.
The 44-year-old caddie, known for his imposing 6-foot-7-inch frame and long partnership with Fleetwood, has faced significant health challenges in recent months. He missed the Valero Texas Open and the Masters Tournament due to his condition. In April, Finnis revealed he had open heart surgery, expressing hope for recovery.
Reflecting on his health struggles, Finnis shared with The Telegraph that a bacterial infection worsened his pre-existing heart condition, necessitating the surgery. “They are not exactly sure what happened but bacteria got into a hole in my heart that I’d lived with previously with no problems and then ate away both valves,” he said. Surgeons managed to fit a metal valve and repair the other, preventing the need for a tissue valve replacement every seven years. Finnis praised the NHS and his surgical team, emphasizing the critical care he received.
Fleetwood expressed relief and happiness at Finnis’ return, noting the emotional journey from diagnosis to recovery. “I’ve spoken to him a lot through the whole thing, obviously, and the process went from not knowing what’s wrong to finding out and not believing this is actually happening to worrying about the operation,” said Fleetwood.
The duo has enjoyed a successful partnership over six years, winning seven tournaments and propelling Fleetwood into the world’s top 10. As Fleetwood prepares for The Open, he emphasized the importance of not rushing Finnis’ recovery, highlighting the paramount importance of health.
With Finnis back, Fleetwood aims to make a strong bid for the title, strengthened by the return of his trusted caddie and friend.
