Robert MacIntyre is set to reunite with Rory McIlroy at the Scottish Open this week, marking a year since their dramatic duel at The Renaissance Club. MacIntyre, hailing from near Glencruitten, delivered a stunning final round of 64 in North Berwick last year, finishing at 14-under-par. His round was highlighted by an incredible birdie on the 18th hole, where he executed a remarkable shot from the rough through gusty winds, landing the ball just three feet from the pin.
However, McIlroy, a four-time major champion, was still on the course and making a strong finish. He managed a brilliant birdie on the penultimate hole to tie with MacIntyre. On the wind-swept 18th, McIlroy struck a two-iron stinger from 202 yards, sending the ball low and straight onto the green. He then sank his birdie putt, securing the victory and edging out MacIntyre.
The Renaissance Club has since commemorated McIlroy’s exceptional shot with a plaque on the 18th fairway. This year, MacIntyre and McIlroy will be paired together for the first two rounds of the 2024 Scottish Open, along with fellow Ryder Cup star Viktor Hovland.
Reflecting on last year’s event, MacIntyre shared his thoughts: “I come from a small town and have always had great support from family and friends, but the support I received at that tournament was unbelievable. I’ve always dreamed of winning a Scottish Open or an Open. When I holed that putt on 18, the noise and support were amazing. You never think moments like that will happen, but they did.”
