Rory McIlroy returned to Scotland to defend his title at the Genesis Scottish Open, hoping to shake off his disappointment from last month’s U.S. Open finish, where he placed second to Bryson DeChambeau at Pinehurst No. 2. This is the third year the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have co-sanctioned the event at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. The field includes 75 players from each tour, competing for a $9 million purse, with the winner set to take home $1.62 million on Sunday.
Last year, McIlroy birdied the final two holes to edge out Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by a shot. To commemorate McIlroy’s approach on the 72nd hole—a 2-iron from 202 yards into a fierce wind landing 10 feet from the pin—a plaque was installed on the 18th fairway.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has opted out of playing this week and will return for the British Open at Royal Troon. Meanwhile, PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa, and Victor Hovland are among the top-10 players in the field. Last week’s John Deere Classic winner, Davis Thompson, is also competing after three consecutive top-10 finishes.
