Elin Nordegren made a harsh remark to her husband Tiger Woods’ mistress on the night she discovered his serial infidelity, which eventually led to the end of their marriage.
On the fateful night, Elin chased Woods out of their house wielding one of his golf clubs. This marked a dramatic downfall for the acclaimed golfer, who had amassed a fortune of $1 billion, including $78 million in endorsements, had just won the Masters in Australia, and was photographed with then-president Barack Obama at the White House that same year.
Despite the scandal, Woods continued his golfing career, although it has faced scrutiny recently ahead of the Open Championship. Rival golfer Colin Montgomerie even suggested that Woods should retire, citing his struggle to regain his former peak performance.
Woods and Elin share two children, Sam and Charlie. In November 2009, news broke of Woods’ affair with New York City nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel. Uchitel had been seen checking into the same hotel as Woods during the American Masters and reportedly told friends she was in love with him.
Woods attempted to suppress the accusations before the story went public, putting Elin on the phone with Uchitel for a half-hour conversation. However, Elin was not convinced. After Woods left his phone unattended, Elin found the name of another woman, Jaimee Grubbs, and contacted her. Elin left a stern voicemail saying, “You know who this is, because you are f- -king my husband.” Unaware of Elin’s call, Woods also tried to reach Grubbs, leaving a message asking her to remove her name from her voicemail to avoid detection by his wife.
The story broke the next day on Thanksgiving, and Elin remained silent. Uchitel claimed that she and Woods began their affair four months after Woods’ son was born, showing friends intimate messages and asserting Woods was divorcing his wife. Elin discovered some of these messages on Woods’ phone, including one declaring, “You are the only one I’ve ever loved.”
Elin confronted Woods, who tried to flee by texting Uchitel from the bathroom. Elin threw Woods’ phone at him and chased him with a golf club. Woods fled in his car, crashing it and knocking himself out for six minutes. Elin claimed she broke the car windows to rescue him.
The couple refused to cooperate with police interviews, and within two weeks, 14 women came forward claiming affairs with Woods during his marriage. Consequently, Woods lost endorsement deals with Nike, Gatorade, Gillette, and Accenture. At a press conference, Woods admitted, “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable.”
“For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for, but there’s one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It hurts me that people would fabricate a story like that.” The couple divorced in August 2010.
