Jordan Spieth’s frustration at Royal Troon on Friday led to an unexpected moment for Sky Golf commentators, who had to apologize after an expletive from the American golfer was accidentally aired.
The 30-year-old from Dallas, Texas, was navigating his second round at the 152nd Open Championships in Scotland, sitting at T54 with a score of +3. He aimed to improve on his 71 strokes from Thursday’s round, competing alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Young as the tournament progressed.
However, Spieth encountered trouble during his current round at Troon, slicing his shot far right onto the railway tracks bordering the tenth hole. Frustrated with his effort while attempting to maintain an even score, Spieth yelled, “S***,” gripping his driver tightly. The Sky Golf commentary team quickly apologized for the foul language that viewers might have heard.
Despite the setback, Spieth managed to recover from the shot and had a chance at par from seven feet. Unfortunately, he missed, dropping to +1. His troubles continued on the eleventh hole, where he shanked another tee shot out of bounds, resulting in a drop shot. He putted from the fringe of the green for a bogey but ultimately ended up with a double bogey, giving him an overall round score of +3 so far.
Cameron Young, meanwhile, shares the same score as Spieth. Scheffler, on the other hand, is finding success at Troon, sitting at T11 with a score of -1, alongside players like Jason Day and Xander Schauffele. Despite the challenges, Spieth hopes to add to his three major tournament victories.
Spieth won the Masters and the US Open in 2015, and he captured his first Open Championship win at Royal Birkdale in 2017, finishing with an overall score of -12. Matt Kuchar was the runner-up with -9, and Li Haotong finished third with -6.
