Daniel Brown narrowly avoided hitting Scottie Scheffler with a wayward tee shot on day three of The Open. Brown, a surprising contender in this year’s tournament, had a mishap on the seventh hole. The 29-year-old, participating in his first major tournament, sliced his shot far to the right and yelled “fore.” The ball nearly hit Scheffler and his playing partner, Dean Burmester, who were preparing to putt on the adjacent eighth green.
The ball bounced on the eighth green, barely missing Scheffler’s head, and stopped on the edge of the fairway near the rough. Sky Sports commentator Ewen Murray expressed his shock, saying, “Oh, there’s the eighth green! Wow, coming through. I never saw that play and neither did the guys on the eighth! That’s one way to take out the world No 1, on the back of his head. Jeepers. He air-mailed the green.”
Brown, an unexpected contender, led the field after day one with a six-under-par opening round. He still has a chance to win the Claret Jug, aiming to surpass Shane Lowry before Sunday’s end. Scheffler, Billy Horschel, and Xander Schauffele are also in contention.
Meanwhile, Si Woo Kim made the first hole-in-one of this year’s tournament on the 17th hole, delighting fans with a brilliant shot from 238 yards that rolled safely into the cup.
