In the 2024 LIV Golf League, players finishing 49th and below will face relegation. Unlike the previous year, where only four players were relegated, this season sees more players at risk of losing their spots. While team captains are exempt from relegation, the lowest-finishing non-captains will lose their LIV status.
Relegated players have the chance to regain their spot through the LIV Golf Promotions event, a three-day shootout where all relegated players can compete for a place back in the league. However, if they fail to requalify, their professional journeys take different paths.
For example, three of the four relegated players from the 2023 season—Chase Koepka, James Piot, Sihwan Kim, and Jediah Morgan—competed in the Promotions event in Abu Dhabi but did not make it back into the league. These players have had varied experiences in 2024:
1. **Jediah Morgan** has been the most active, making eight starts.
2. **Sihwan Kim** has played seven times, including on the Korean PGA Tour.
3. **James Piot** has played four times.
4. **Chase Koepka** has yet to play this year.
Relegated players often find opportunities on the Asian Tour, a partner of LIV Golf. The PIF-funded LIV Golf League has invested in the Asian Tour’s International Series, whose season-ending winner earns a place in the LIV Golf League. Although relegated players cannot compete on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour due to suspensions, they can play on the DP World Tour if they qualify. They can also participate in non-PGA Tour affiliated events and may receive sponsor invitations due to their LIV Golf background.
Additionally, some relegated players serve as reserves during the season, traveling with the circuit and stepping in for injured players.
In summary, while relegation from the LIV Golf League presents challenges, players have multiple pathways to continue their careers, whether through promotions events, the Asian Tour, or other international circuits.
