Jon Rahm, who joined LIV Golf ahead of the 2024 season with a $600 million deal, is advocating for the inclusion of links golf in the LIV Golf schedule. Rahm, struggling to regain his top form since his switch from the PGA Tour, showed a significant turnaround with a tied-seventh finish at The Open Championship at Royal Troon.
Following the event, Rahm revealed his desire to include links golf in the LIV schedule to better prepare players for major tournaments. Speaking to Golf Digest before this week’s LIV event in the UK, Rahm emphasized the importance of playing links courses ahead of The Open. He noted the challenges and adjustments required, particularly with greens and ball reactions on the ground.
LIV Golf’s 2025 schedule is already planned, so Rahm may need to wait before his suggestion is implemented. However, he intends to discuss the idea with fellow players to gather support. “LIV management has existing contracts with some venues,” Rahm said. “It’s not as simple as just deciding to include links golf. I want to talk to other players on LIV because there’s strength in numbers if several of us agree.”
At The Open, Troon presented tough conditions, especially during the third round, with relentless rain and fierce winds. Rahm, caught in the tumultuous weather, was surprised by its severity. “I didn’t expect it to be that difficult,” he admitted. “The weather app suggested it wouldn’t be too windy if it rained, but it turned quickly.”
Despite the challenging conditions, Rahm started strong in the final round, birdieing the first three holes and another on the seventh, going four-under for the day. However, he couldn’t maintain the momentum on the back-nine, finishing eight shots behind Xander Schauffele, who won the Claret Jug with a final round of six-under 65.
