Tiger Woods has revealed his intentions to compete in PGA Tour Champions events once he turns 50. This announcement comes through comments made by fellow major champion Padraig Harrington.
Harrington shared this news in an interview with Today’s Golfer ahead of the Senior Open at Carnoustie. “I met Tiger recently and he said he was looking forward to coming out onto the Champions Tour,” Harrington recounted. “I think his words were, ‘I can’t wait to beat you out on the Champions Tour’, or something like that. He doesn’t want me to have it all my own way, let’s put it like that! I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Currently 48 years old, Woods will be eligible to join the PGA Tour Champions circuit at age 50. One notable aspect of the senior tour is the allowance of golf carts, a feature that legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus has hinted Woods might take advantage of.
**Woods’ Struggles and Determination**
The 2024 Open Championship marked Woods’ eighth major start since his serious car crash three years ago. His recent results have been less than stellar, casting a shadow on a career that once dominated the golfing world. Woods made a dramatic return to the sport at the 2022 Masters at Augusta National, but his performances since then have been inconsistent:
– PGA Championship at Southern Hills – WD
– The Open at St Andrews – MC
– The Masters – WD
– The Masters – 60th
– PGA Championship at Valhalla – MC
– U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2 – MC
– The Open – MC
Despite these struggles, Woods remains optimistic about his future in golf. “I’ve gotten better, even though my results really haven’t shown it,” he stated. “I just need to keep progressing like that and then eventually start playing more competitively and start getting into kind of the competitive flow again. I’m going to just keep getting physically better and keep working on it.”
Woods expressed his love for playing in major championships despite his recent missed cuts. “I’ve always loved playing major championships,” he said. “I just wish I was more physically sharp coming into the majors. Obviously it tests you mentally, physically, emotionally, and I just wasn’t as sharp as I needed to be. I was hoping that I would find it somehow, just never did.”
Looking ahead, Woods has confirmed his participation in The Open next year when the major heads to Royal Portrush in Ireland.
Woods’ determination to return to competitive form and his plans to join the PGA Tour Champions signal his enduring passion for the game, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see him back in action.
