Tony Finau faced a group of angry protesters demanding he “pay his debts” when he arrived to host his annual golf tournament in Utah. Approximately a dozen people gathered outside Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, where the PGA Tour star conducts his tournament and clinic.
According to Deseret News, the protest lasted about two and a half hours. The demonstrators accused Finau of failing to repay them or their loved ones hundreds of thousands of dollars for their support during his rise to the top of the golf world. They displayed signs with messages such as “Keep Your Word,” “Tony Pay Your Debts,” “Tony Pay Your Family Back,” and “Tony Don’t Forget Uncle Toa.”
One protester claimed that Finau or his family owed him over $100,000 for expenses including loans, rent payments, cars, and travel to China. A former family friend has reportedly been taking legal action against Finau for nearly four years, claiming he is owed more than $600,000 and seeking 20 percent of Finau’s tour winnings. An eight-day jury trial is scheduled to begin in September, while another lawsuit against the Finau family was dismissed in 2022.
Despite earning $42,411,360 on the PGA Tour, it is alleged that more than ten people are owed money by the Finau family. The Tony Finau Foundation and the Utah Sports Commission, which sponsors the Utah Championship, also came under scrutiny during the protest.
Protest organizer Rocky Bowlby claimed, “No one knows the real Tony.” He emphasized that the protest was aimed at raising awareness about the alleged debts. Finau, who was born in Salt Lake City, arrived at the course around two hours after the protest began but did not acknowledge the protesters.
