Tommy Fleetwood, currently competing at the Olympic Games in Paris, and his wife Clare, who also serves as his manager, have shared insights into their unique working relationship. The couple, who have been married since 2017, previously questioned whether they could effectively balance their professional and personal lives.
Clare, who is 23 years older than Tommy, initially hesitated to enter a romantic relationship with him due to their age difference. However, after their romantic involvement, they decided to test their professional dynamic by setting a six-month trial period to evaluate whether Clare could continue managing Tommy while maintaining their relationship.
In an interview on the Performance People podcast in May 2023, Clare reflected on the initial doubts she had. “As we were listening to different proposals, I thought, ‘I can do this’,” she said. “But initially, I wasn’t sure if I could and shouldn’t. We gave it six months, and it worked, so we carried on.”
The couple has developed strategies to manage their work-life balance. Clare mentioned that she makes a conscious effort to avoid discussing work all the time, even though she finds it challenging. They have set up an office in their home where they can discuss work matters separately from their personal space. Tommy prefers to unwind with books, podcasts, and meditation, while Clare uses her spare time to focus on work.
Tommy commented on their arrangement, saying, “We always agreed that if it didn’t work out, we would find another manager. But we decided to give it a shot.” He is also a stepfather to Clare’s two children, Oscar (17) and Mo (16), and they have a six-year-old daughter, Frankie.
As Tommy competes at Le Golf National in the Olympic tournament, he aims to make his family proud. He has fond memories of the venue, having won the French Open there in 2017. He also enjoyed a notable performance in the Ryder Cup the following year. Tommy’s Olympic debut in Tokyo three years ago saw him finish joint-16th with an 11-under-par score, trailing gold medalist Xander Schauffele by seven shots.
