Charlie Woods demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill, reminiscent of his father Tiger Woods, by securing his first major tournament victory in his first start after a disappointing performance at the US Junior Amateur.
Just a week ago, 15-year-old Woods missed the cut at the US Junior Amateur after a tough USGA debut, finishing 22 over par through 36 holes. However, he quickly rebounded, winning the South Florida Junior Cup on July 31. This event is one of eight major tournaments on the South Florida Junior Tour.
Woods displayed the same battling spirit that characterized his father’s legendary career. He shot 73-68-73 at BallenIsles Country Club’s East Course, finishing as the only player under par in a field of 63 competitors. This victory is particularly impressive given his recent struggles.
In his post-round comments, Woods reflected on his determination and hard work. “I wanted it so bad,” he said. “I felt focused, and I knew what I had to do to get it done. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do better. I feel like it was a compilation of a lot of hard work this summer. I wanted to redeem myself, and I feel great about how I played.”
Carrying the Woods surname brings significant pressure and expectations, but Charlie appears to have a strong attitude towards the game. His exposure to high-level golf has been extensive, regularly partnering with his father at the PNC Championship and assisting him at major championships, including Augusta. Tiger Woods has even mentioned that Charlie has been particularly helpful with his putting stroke.
Despite the attention garnered by his poor showing at the US Junior Amateur, Charlie has continued to compete at a high level. He attempted to qualify for the US Open, shooting 81 at a local qualifying event, and participated in pre-qualifying for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic, where he shot 86.
While these attempts did not go as planned, they are beyond what is typically expected for a 15-year-old golfer. Winning two events in two months at his level indicates that Charlie Woods is progressing well. Whether he reaches the same heights as his father remains to be seen, but his recent performance and attitude suggest a promising future.
