Simone Biles has expressed frustration with reporters at the Paris Olympics for focusing on athletes’ future plans immediately after their medal wins. Biles, the most decorated American gymnast of all time, added another gold medal to her collection by winning the vault finals on Saturday.
The 27-year-old had already claimed gold in the team finals and all-around events earlier in the week. With a score of 15.3 across her two vaults, she secured her third gold medal of the Games.
Following her victory, Biles took to social media to criticize the line of questioning from reporters in Paris. She wrote on X: “You guys really gotta stop asking athletes what’s next after they win a medal at the Olympics.” In another post, she added: “Let us soak up the moment we’ve worked our whole lives for.”
When a fan asked her what comes next after winning another gold, she humorously replied: “Babysitting the medal.”
Biles’ win in the vault final marks her seventh Olympic gold medal. Performing in front of a star-studded audience that included John Travolta, Allyson Felix, Pharrell, Flavor Flav, her teammates, and her parents, Biles averaged 15.3 for her signature Yurchenko double pike and Cheng vaults. This victory makes her the second woman to win two vault crowns, following Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia, who won in 1964 and 1968.
In addition to her vault victory, Biles has secured three gold medals in Paris, including wins in the team finals and individual all-around competition. Her teammate Jade Carey won bronze in the vault, while Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade took the silver medal.
Biles now has a total of 10 Olympic medals, tying her for the third-most by a female gymnast. She has also increased her overall medal count at major international competitions to 40, the highest of any gymnast.
Biles will have two more opportunities to add to her medal tally in Paris, as she is set to compete in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Monday.
