Tommy Fleetwood recently opted to reject a contract offer from LIV Golf after discussing it with his wife and manager, Clare. The Olympic silver medallist was approached by the Saudi-backed tour, much like many PGA golfers have been ahead of LIV Golf’s third season this year.
Despite the lucrative offers that have enticed many top-tier players over the past two years, Fleetwood, 33, and Clare, 56, who also serves as his manager, decided together to decline the offer. They discussed their reasoning on the Performance People podcast, with Tommy explaining that money was not a primary motivator for him. “Most sportsmen really don’t do it for the money,” he said. “I never really played for the money. For me, it’s about personal satisfaction and performance. Can I win the tournaments? Money didn’t come into the equation for me, although it’s understandable why it appeals to others.”
Fleetwood acknowledged that the guaranteed payouts from LIV Golf might be tempting, but his decision was influenced by discussions with Clare. “It’s my passion, but you also have to consider your family,” he said. Clare’s perspective was crucial; she always prioritized his happiness and what was best for him. She questioned whether the move would truly make a difference in their lives, ultimately concluding that it would not.
Fleetwood elaborated, “Everything I do is to play as well as I can and get the most out of myself as a golfer and athlete. Whether I’m playing where I am now or somewhere else, my decisions are based on that, not on money.”
Fleetwood’s choice has been validated by his performance at Paris 2024, where he finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at Le Golf National.
