Tommy Fleetwood, the world No. 11 golfer, recently revealed that he turned down an offer from LIV Golf to join their third season, despite the substantial salary increase it promised. His decision was made after thorough discussions with his wife, Clare, who is 23 years his senior. For Fleetwood, the financial gain was not a motivating factor.
Speaking on the Performance People podcast last year, Fleetwood explained his perspective: “Most sportsmen don’t do it for the money. I’ve never played for the money. It’s about personal satisfaction and performance, not financial gain. While the appeal of guaranteed pay is understandable, it wasn’t a deciding factor for me.”
Fleetwood emphasized the importance of his family in making such decisions. “I discussed it with Clare because it’s not just me involved. It’s about what makes me happy and what I feel is best for my career. Clare asked, ‘Will it actually make any difference? Is it going to change your life?’ And we realized it wouldn’t.”
Clare added, “It won’t change our life.” Fleetwood continued, “My focus is on playing my best and getting the most out of myself as a golfer and athlete. That drives my decisions, not the money.”
Fleetwood’s decision seems to be justified by his recent runner-up finish at the Games, a qualification he might have missed had he joined LIV Golf, whose events don’t contribute to the Official World Golf Ranking.
Clare, now 56, has been a significant figure in Fleetwood’s career. She became his manager when he joined Hambric Sports Management in 2015. Their professional relationship evolved into a personal one, leading to their marriage two years later, after the birth of their son, Franklin.
