Jason Day recalls a remarkable but brief period in his career when he felt invincible, frequently winning tournaments. Now, he’s in awe of Scottie Scheffler, who’s experiencing a prolonged golden streak, including Olympic triumphs. Determined to keep up, Australia’s No.1 golfer is resolute about catching the “Master Olympian.”
Scheffler recently delivered a stunning performance with a nine-under 62 at Le Golf National, marking his seventh win this year, including prestigious victories at the Masters and the Players Championship. When asked who Scheffler’s winning consistency reminded him of, Day promptly responded, “Tiger.”
Reflecting on his own prime during 2015 and 2016, the 36-year-old Queenslander recognizes that Scheffler’s prowess is unparalleled. “I had a brief spell where I did everything right and felt unbeatable, but Scheffler’s achievements are extraordinary,” Day remarked.
Day admires Scheffler’s game for its precision and lack of mistakes. “He doesn’t blow you away like Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, but he’s incredibly consistent. His iron play is exceptional, and his short game is reliable. It’s tough to compete against someone who rarely errs.”
Day, who finished tied for ninth in Paris, is determined to elevate his game despite the challenges of balancing a family life with five children. “To reach No.1, you need to live and breathe golf, sacrificing time with family,” he explained.
Confident in his abilities, Day believes he can return to the top. “If I can improve my iron play, I can definitely do it. My putting is too good not to,” he stated. However, he acknowledges the difficulty of remaining focused with family responsibilities. “Being selfish with your time is hard, but we’ll see if I can manage it.”
Day’s determination to catch up with Scheffler underscores the relentless drive required to compete at the highest level in golf.
