The Wyndham Championship, the final event of the PGA Tour’s regular season, will commence on Thursday without spectators because of the anticipated hazardous weather from Tropical Storm Debby.
In an announcement made on Wednesday, the tournament organizers stated that fans would not be allowed on the grounds of Sedgefield Country Club for the first round of play.
Despite the absence of spectators, competitors are still set to begin at 6:50 a.m. on Thursday. The organizers assured that play will continue as long as the weather permits.
Fans holding tickets for Thursday’s round are allowed to use them for any of the final three rounds of the tournament.
Tournament director Bobby Powell explained that the decision was challenging but necessary. “This decision was a difficult one for us to make with our partners at the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our top priority,” Powell said in a statement. According to forecasts, Tropical Storm Debby is expected to leave the area by Friday.
Defending champion Lucas Glover expressed his acceptance of the weather situation, acknowledging that it was beyond his control. “We’re going to start when we start and I don’t think there’s much we can do about it,” Glover said. “If it’s tomorrow at 12:54, I’ll be ready to go. If it’s Friday at 4:00, I’ll be ready to go.”
The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs, featuring the top 70 players in the season-long standings, are scheduled to begin next week with the St. Jude FedEx Championship.
