Wyndham Championship First Round Delayed Due to Tropical Storm Debby
The opening round of the Wyndham Championship has been postponed from Thursday to Friday due to the impact of Tropical Storm Debby. No players were able to begin their rounds as the Greensboro area is currently under a flash flood warning, with expected rainfall between four to six inches by the end of Thursday.
Stewart Williams, the on-site meteorologist, reported that heavy rain began early Thursday morning. By 8 a.m. ET, Sedgefield Country Club had already received two inches of rain. Additionally, winds are currently blowing at around 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph.
As a precaution, all tournament facilities remain closed until further notice. The National Weather Service issued a mass notification, warning residents of the severity of the situation: “This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.”
If the weather permits, tournament officials are optimistic that players will be able to start their first rounds on Friday. The next official update is expected at 6 p.m. ET.
Although none of the top PGA Tour stars are participating in the event, it has still attracted several notable players, including pre-tournament favorite Sungjae Im, Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Cameron Young, and Billy Horschel.
Sources indicate that the PGA Tour is determined to complete the first round on Friday, or at the latest by Saturday morning. The plan is to finish the second round by Saturday evening, allowing for a 36-hole finale on Sunday. However, a Monday finish is also under consideration, though the PGA Tour is keen to avoid this, given the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs at the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week.
