Tiger Woods’ ex-coach, Hank Haney, has stirred the pot with his latest remarks on the ongoing saga between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. Contrary to recent rumors about Jon Rahm’s supposed dissatisfaction with LIV Golf, Haney believes that the real regret lies with the PGA Tour players who chose to stay loyal instead of taking lucrative offers to join LIV Golf.
The speculation about Rahm’s discontent began when a report from Golf Digest suggested that the former World No.1, who reportedly signed a $600 million deal with LIV Golf at the end of 2023, was eager to return to the PGA Tour—even if it meant forfeiting millions. However, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman swiftly dismissed these claims as “asinine” during a broadcast at the LIV Golf Greenbrier event, citing a conversation with Rahm’s manager as evidence that Rahm was content.
Rahm, who has had mixed success in his 12 LIV Golf tournaments this season, with only one win and a narrow loss to Brooks Koepka in a playoff at Greenbrier, currently leads the season-long race for the individual LIV Golf championship. Despite this, the rumors of his unhappiness garnered significant attention last week. Rahm himself has denied these claims, dismissing them as baseless fabrications.
In response to the controversy, Hank Haney, who coached Woods from 2004 to 2010—a period during which Woods won six major titles—shared his perspective. Haney turned the focus away from Rahm and onto PGA Tour players, suggesting that many now regret not accepting the substantial financial incentives to join LIV Golf. According to Haney, “Pro golf is in such a state of flux that the only regret some players have is not having taken the offers from LIV when they had the chance. Classic case of you snooze you lose.”
Haney’s comments come at a time of uncertainty in the golf world, as the PGA Tour and LIV Golf continue to navigate their complex relationship. Just days before Haney’s remarks, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan indicated that no imminent deal with LIV Golf’s financiers was on the horizon, despite ongoing discussions. As the situation evolves, Haney’s bold assertion adds another layer to the ever-changing landscape of professional golf.
