And indeed! Armand Duplantis has broken the world record in pole vaulting in Chorzów! The Swedish athlete, during the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, part of the prestigious Diamond League, vaulted 6.26 meters! This marks Duplantis’ tenth time breaking the world record.
On Wednesday, Duplantis cleared 6.15 meters at the Diamond League competition in Lausanne. On Sunday, at another meet in the Diamond League series in Chorzów during the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, Duplantis broke the world record for the tenth time with a height of 6.26 meters. Watch the video of this great moment.
The 24-year-old Swede was a star at the Paris Olympics, where he won the competition, breaking the world record for the ninth time with a height of 6.25 meters, defending the title he won three years ago in Tokyo.
— “Stadion Śląski is a special place, I feel great here,” Duplantis said at the press conference on Saturday, and the two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion was right, breaking the world record for the tenth time.
Duplantis won the World Championships in Eugene in 2022 and last year’s championships in Budapest, as well as twice the European Championships, in Berlin in 2018 and Munich in 2022. He is also the indoor world champion from Belgrade in 2022 and the European champion from Toruń in 2021. In March, he won the gold medal at the Indoor World Championships in Glasgow.
**Historic Competition in Chorzów**
The pole vault competition in Chorzów was historic not only because of Duplantis but also because American Sam Kendricks cleared 6.06 meters and Greek Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.00 meters.
**Armand Duplantis to be Honored with a Monument**
The authorities of Uppsala, where the Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis lives and trains, are planning to honor his achievements with a monument.
However, the city council is politically divided on this matter, with the Moderaterna party pushing the hardest. They argue that Duplantis, who was born in the USA, brings fame to the city worldwide since he settled in Sweden three years ago. He trains with the local club Uppsala IF, which he represents in national championships.
“We want to honor him with a monument or statue in a central location in the city, and I’m sure that every resident of Uppsala will be proud of this, just as they are today of Armand’s achievements,” said Sofia Andersson, a councilor from Moderaterna, to the newspaper “Expressen.”
She emphasized that taxpayers will not incur additional costs since the funds for this will come from the cultural budget, which needs to be spent anyway.
