Australia’s tennis star Alex de Minaur acknowledges that he’ll need to bring his A-game to overcome Britain’s Jack Draper at the US Open. As the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year enters its decisive stages, the remaining players are pushing hard to claim the ultimate prize.
One of the most anticipated quarterfinal matchups at the 2024 US Open will feature De Minaur against Draper. The 25-year-old De Minaur advanced by defeating fellow Australian Jordan Thompson with a score of 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Meanwhile, Draper secured his place by dispatching the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
In an interview with a British media outlet, De Minaur emphasized the unpredictability of tennis. He noted that past encounters hold little weight compared to the performance on any given day, and praised Draper’s skills. “I think the biggest thing we need to understand is that nothing is guaranteed in tennis,” De Minaur said. “It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve played someone; it doesn’t mean much. Jack is coming off his best year by far, playing with a lot of confidence. He has some big weapons—his serve, backhand, and forehand at times. Facing someone like him, especially a lefty, is always tough. I’ve had some success in the past, and I’ll try to draw on that. I’ll go out there, give it my all, and compete. These matches are there to be w
on.”
