Jannik Sinner has reached the semifinals of the US Open for the first time, marking a historic achievement for Italian tennis. In a highly anticipated quarterfinal match at Flushing Meadows, the young Italian defeated Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
With this accomplishment, Sinner becomes the first Italian player in the Open era to reach at least the semifinals in all four Grand Slam tournaments. He achieved this milestone starting with Wimbledon 2023, followed by the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and now the US Open 2024.
Sinner is also the fourth active player to have reached this mark, joining Novak Djokovic (24 Grand Slam titles), Rafael Nadal (22 titles), and Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion. These achievements underscore Sinner’s adaptability across surfaces and his strong mentality.
In a post-match interview with former tennis player Brad Gilbert, Sinner reflected on his win, saying, “It was a hard-fought match, very physical as we expected. I’m very satisfied with how it went, and I want to thank the crowd for their great support.”
Gilbert noted Sinner’s frequent approaches to the net, especially in the critical third set. Sinner responded, “We planned to play aggressively, and my team and I are always working to improve in that area, taking time away from the opponent. I was happy with how I executed that today. I’m looking forward to the semifinal in a few days.”
