Jannik Sinner has openly discussed his key weaknesses following comments from US Open opponent Jack Draper, who suggested that Sinner might be “too nice.” The Italian tennis star has reached his first final at the US Open after defeating a strong-performing Draper in New York.
British No. 1 Draper, who was competing in his first Grand Slam semi-final, has had a standout year marked by significant personal improvements. However, despite his determined effort at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sinner secured a straight-sets victory, winning 7-5, 7-6, 6-2.
When asked about Sinner’s potential vulnerabilities, Draper, 22, who has known the Italian for many years, pointed to his belief that Sinner’s biggest flaw is his overly kind demeanor. Responding to Draper’s remarks, Sinner acknowledged that his true weaknesses lie in his shot selection and missing crucial volleys.
Sinner explained: “Yeah, going to the net for sure, sometimes I miss volleys. Shot selection is another area where I feel like I can still improve a little. It’s often the small details that make a big difference at this level. My team and I are well aware of what needs to get better. Today, for instance, I probably should have gone to the net more often. But it takes time—there’s no magic solution.”
He continued, “You have to experience certain moments. I’ve lost matches while making the right decisions and won some while making the wrong ones. The key is always to communicate with your team and strive for balance. I’m confident there’s still room for me to grow.”
Draper, who fought valiantly against Sinner, is optimistic about his own future, believing that it’s only a matter of time before he claims his first Grand Slam title. As the leading British player following Andy Murray’s retirement, Draper is carrying the hopes of British tennis.
