Rafael Nadal and former tennis star Manolo Santana find themselves among the nominees for the prestigious Spanish ‘The Best in History’ award. This distinguished accolade, organized by La 1 television channel, celebrates 50 of Spain’s most remarkable figures across various categories. A derivative of the renowned BBC’s ‘100 Greatest Britons,’ this award has expanded its reach to 30 different countries.
Nadal, hailed as the most revered Spanish tennis player, boasts an illustrious career spanning over two decades. With an impressive tally of 23 Grand Slam titles, the 37-year-old has left an indelible mark on the sport. Particularly dominant at Roland Garros, Nadal has clinched a record-breaking 14 titles at the iconic venue.
After a hiatus in the 2023 season due to injury and subsequent surgery, Nadal made a triumphant return to tennis in January 2024. His comeback at the Brisbane International has been seamless, securing two wins against formidable opponents Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler, propelling him to the quarterfinals.
Manolo Santana, another luminary in Spanish tennis, enjoyed success in a different era. The two-time Roland Garros champion commenced his career in the amateur era in 1965, culminating in his retirement from professional play in 1977. Santana’s legacy includes an impressive record of 96 titles and four Grand Slam victories across Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Despite his passing in 2021, Santana is set to be posthumously honored in the ‘The Best in History’ awards.
The list of 50 candidates for the Spanish ‘Best in History’ was revealed by RTVE Comunicación y Participación on X, accompanied by a statement outlining the criteria behind the nominations.
