Under the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium on a rainy day, Aryna Sabalenka powered past Jessica Pegula in 1 hour and 53 minutes. Reflecting on her victory, Sabalenka said, “The US Open is a special place for me. I’ve faced tough losses here, but I always dreamed of holding this trophy. No matter what, I came back stronger, learned from my mistakes, and never gave up.”
Sabalenka led by a set and 3-0 before Pegula surged back, taking five straight games and serving for the second set at 5-4. However, Sabalenka weathered the challenge, closing out the match in straight sets. This victory marks her first US Open title after finishing as runner-up to Coco Gauff last year, where she had also led by a set in the final.
Sabalenka dropped only one set throughout the tournament, to No. 29 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round. This win further cements her dominance on hard courts, having now gone 27-1 in her last four hard-court Slams. She joins the ranks of elite players, becoming the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win both the Australian Open and US Open in the same year.
The match was characterized by fierce second-serve returns from both players. In the first set, Pegula saved four set points but ultimately lost after a double fault and a sharp backhand winner from Sabalenka. The second set saw Pegula take charge, winning five games in a row, but Sabalenka held firm, saving crucial points before sealing the win with a forehand winner.
With 40 winners to Pegula’s 17 and an 18-of-23 success rate at the net, Sabalenka’s aggressive style earned her the title. Afterward, she shared, “It’s hard to describe the feeling—laughing, crying, all at once. It’s the best feeling, and I hope everyone can experience it.”
