According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, reporting from Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, 30, was stopped by police for speeding and briefly placed in handcuffs after an officer took issue with his tone. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, informed Darlington that Hill was detained and released, and he is still expected to play in the team’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Rosenhaus compared Hill’s situation to that of golfer Scottie Scheffler at the U.S. PGA in May. “I assume this is a similar situation,” Rosenhaus said. “I believe Tyreek will be fine today, but we need to ensure he wasn’t mistreated.”
The Miami Dolphins issued a statement: “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident near the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer support. All players, including Tyreek, have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”
Sports fans quickly drew comparisons between Hill’s incident and Scheffler’s arrest, as both players were able to continue their respective jobs on the same day despite being detained. Darlington had also covered Scheffler’s arrest on Friday, May 17, during the U.S. PGA at Valhalla Golf Club.
Scheffler, 28, was arrested around 6 a.m. after misunderstanding the traffic flow near the golf course following a fatal collision earlier that morning. Footage showed Scheffler being handcuffed and taken to jail. He was booked at 7:28 a.m. and released by 8:40 a.m., allowing him to compete in the second round of the tournament, where he shot a round of 66 and finished T8 overall.
Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. His court appearance, originally scheduled for May 21, was postponed to June 3, a week before the 2024 U.S. Open.
On May 29, all charges against Scheffler were dropped after it was revealed that Detective Bryan Gillis had violated policy by not using his body-worn camera during the arrest, according to Jefferson County Attorney Mik
e O’Connell.
