Less than four months after Scottie Scheffler’s shocking arrest before his second-round tee time at the US PGA at Valhalla, a nearly identical incident unfolded involving Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill just ahead of his team’s first NFL game of the season.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, reporting live from Hard Rock Stadium, multiple sources confirmed that Hill, 30, was stopped by police for speeding and placed in handcuffs after an officer allegedly took issue with his tone. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, later informed Darlington that the wide receiver had been detained and released, and assured fans that Hill would still be suiting up for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Rosenhaus remarked that the situation bore a striking resemblance to Scheffler’s encounter at the US PGA in May, adding, “I think Tyreek will be fine today, but we need to ensure he wasn’t mistreated.”
The Miami Dolphins also issued a statement: “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”
Fans were quick to draw comparisons to Scheffler’s dramatic arrest on May 17th, especially since ESPN’s Darlington was also the first to report that story from Valhalla. Despite the arrest, Scheffler was able to continue competing that same day.
Scheffler, now 28, was taken into custody just after 6 a.m. on May 17th as he headed to Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the US PGA. The two-time Masters champion was detained after misinterpreting the traffic flow near the course, which was under tight control following a fatal accident around 5 a.m.
He was booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections at 7:28 a.m. and released at 8:40 a.m., allowing him to compete in the second round, where he remarkably shot a 66, eventually finishing T8 in the tournament.
Scheffler faced multiple charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. His arraignment, initially scheduled for May 21st, was postponed to June 3rd, a week before the 2024 US Open. However, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell dropped all charges on May 29th after discovering that Detective Bryan Gillis, who was involved in the arrest, violated protocol by failing to activate his body camera.
Despite the ordeal, Scheffler rebounded in spectacular fashion, going on to win eight times in 2024, including last weekend’s FedEx Cup, where he claimed a record $25 million prize. Scheffler, currently the World No. 1, also won Olympic gold in Paris last month and has confirmed his participation in a PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf match in Vegas this December, where he will team up with Rory McIlroy against LIV’s Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.
