Andrea Petkovic recently shared her thoughts on why fans tend to gravitate more towards Carlos Alcaraz than Jannik Sinner. According to Petkovic, Alcaraz’s flashier style of play has contributed to his greater popularity.
Sinner, who recently won his second Grand Slam title at the 2024 US Open by defeating Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, has faced criticism for his more subdued game. Meanwhile, Alcaraz exited the tournament early after a surprising straight-sets loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. Despite Sinner’s success, viewership numbers for his final against Taylor Fritz averaged 1.8 million on ESPN, a 31% drop from last year’s final between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. It also marked a decline compared to Medvedev’s semifinal win over Alcaraz, which garnered 2.26 million viewers.
Speaking on the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Petkovic noted that when Sinner isn’t performing at his best, his game can seem “boring,” as it relies heavily on consistency. In contrast, Alcaraz’s failures tend to be more dramatic and exciting to watch, which attracts fans. “When Jannik doesn’t play well, as he didn’t in the first week, he becomes boring. He just plays solid until the other player makes a mistake,” Petkovic explained. “But when he’s at his best, he’s the most spectacular player in the world.” She contrasted this with Alcaraz, saying, “Even when Carlos fails, he does so gloriously. People are drawn to that chaos, and it’s more interesting to watch.”
Petkovic also urged anyone who finds Sinner’s game dull to watch him play live, where his skill is truly apparent.
