Jannik Sinner made headlines with a bold statement, declaring his pick for the GOAT in tennis while notably ignoring Novak Djokovic. Sinner, who became the first Italian man to win the US Open by defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the men’s singles final, has been on fire this year. His victory silenced critics who had questioned his recent doping controversy, which emerged at the start of the tournament.
In March, Sinner tested positive twice for an anabolic agent but managed to avoid a ban. An independent tribunal accepted his defense, stating that the test results were due to unintentional contamination. Despite the controversy, Sinner continued his stellar season, ending with a 55-5 win-loss record and the US Open title.
In a video posted by the ATP following his victory, Sinner was asked about his pick for the greatest tennis player of all time. Surprisingly, he bypassed Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, declaring, “From my point of view, it’s Roger Federer.”
Sinner’s dominance in New York was clear as he broke Fritz in the first game of the final. Although Fritz fought back to take a 3-2 lead in the first set, Sinner handled the pressure with poise, closing out the set and eventually the match. In the third set, after breaking for a 4-3 lead and holding for 5-3, Fritz lost the final four games, handing Sinner the victory.
Now the world No. 1 in singles, Sinner boasts 16 ATP Tour singles titles, including two Grand Slam trophies (2024 Australian Open and 2024 US Open). He also finished as the runner-up at the ATP Finals and led Italy to victory in the 2023 Davis Cup.
Reflecting on his US Open win and the doping controversy, Sinner said, “This title means so much to me; the last period of my career wasn’t easy. But I have my team who supports me every day, and the people close to me.”
